Creative Approach for Audrey II
We are excited to explore different interpretations of Audrey II (the plant).
Originally portrayed through puppetry, many contemporary productions stage Audrey II as a drag performer — offering bold theatricality, physical presence, and heightened personality.
Therefore, we welcome auditions for Audrey II from:
Voice actors
Drag performers
Performers of all genders
Decisions regarding how many puppeteers/ ensemble may be required will be made after Audrey II has been cast.
Roles available
★ Seymour Krelborn
Gender: Male | Playing Age: Adult | Role Size: Lead
Voice: Tenor | Range: A2 – G4 | Dance: Mover
Seymour Krelborn is the timid, awkward, and soft-spoken dreamer at the heart of Skid Row. An orphan with low self-esteem, he yearns for love, acceptance, and a life beyond his meager surroundings. His crush on Audrey is quiet but deep, a beacon of hope in his lonely world.
Everything changes when Seymour discovers the exotic and mysterious plant, Audrey II. Suddenly thrust into fame and fortune, Seymour is confronted with moral compromise: feeding the plant forces him down a dark, desperate path.
This role demands:
Strong rock-infused vocals
Emotional vulnerability and comedic awkwardness
The ability to portray a tragic transformation from innocence to moral conflict
Physicality to move confidently on stage
★ Audrey
Gender: Female | Playing Age: Adult | Role Size: Lead
Voice: Tenor | Range: A2 – G4 | Dance: Mover
Audrey is sweet, soft-spoken, and quietly resilient. Trapped in an abusive relationship with Orin, she dreams of escaping Skid Row for a safe, loving life. Her warmth and vulnerability illuminate the lives of those around her, especially Seymour.
Audrey’s journey blends comedy and heartbreak, culminating in moments of ultimate selflessness. She inspires hope, even amid tragedy, and embodies the delicate balance of romantic idealism and harsh reality.
This role demands:
Strong rock-style vocals with emotional nuance
Expressive movement and physical storytelling
The ability to shift between humour, pathos, and romantic sincerity
★ Audrey II (the plant)
Gender: Non-specific | Playing Age: Adult | Role Size: Supporting
Voice: Baritone | Range: G2 – G4 | Dance: Non-dancer (if voice only) / Mover (if drag performer)
Audrey II is a hungry plant! Charming, manipulative, and dangerously seductive. With a rich R&B tone, razor-sharp humor, and commanding presence, the plant lures Seymour into moral compromise while asserting its own dark domination.
Originally puppeteered, contemporary productions often cast Audrey II as a drag performer, offering flamboyant theatricality, movement, and personality. We welcome auditions from all genders and performance backgrounds; staging decisions will be shaped around the performer (Voice actor or drag performer). We are excited to explore different interpretations of Audrey II.
This role demands:
Exceptional vocal control and stamina
A dynamic mix of comedy, menace, and seduction
Commanding presence to dominate the stage
Rhythmic and R&B vocal style
★ Mr. Mushnik
Gender: Male | Playing Age: Adult / Mature Adult | Role Size: Supporting
Voice: Baritone | Range: G2 – F4 | Dance: Non-dancer
Mr. Mushnik is the gruff, opportunistic owner of Mushnik’s Florists. Focused on survival and profit, he teeters between comic irascibility and moral ambiguity, quick to scold but eager to seize fortune when Audrey II draws attention.
This role demands:
Strong comedic timing and character acting
Ability to balance bluster, humour, and occasional vulnerability
Vocal clarity for ensemble and solo moments
★ Orin Scrivello, D.D.S.
Gender: Male | Playing Age: Adult / Mature Adult | Role Size: Supporting
Voice: Baritone | Range: G2 – G4 | Dance: Mover
Orin is a flamboyant, sadistic dentist — audacious, cocky, and dangerously comic. His exaggerated “bad boy” persona masks genuine menace, blending campy humour with moments of unsettling threat.
This role demands:
Physicality and stage swagger
Exaggerated comic villainy balanced with vocal precision
Ability to deliver memorable show-stopping numbers like “Be A Dentist!”
The same actor also plays various cameo roles throughout:
Voice Over – A God-like voice at the start of the show
Wino - Skid row ensemble
The Customer - Act 1 & Act 2
Radio Announcer – Upbeat promotional voice
Mr. Bernstein – Fast-talking media-maven
Mrs. Luce – The editor’s wife, English accent
Skip Snip – Trench-coated East Coast agent
Patrick Martin - Another sleazy opportunist
★ The Urchins - Crystal, Chiffon & Ronnette
Gender: Female | Playing Age: Young Adult | Role Size: Supporting
Voice: Mezzo-Soprano | Range: Ab3 – F5 | Dance: Mover
The urchins serve as a modern Greek chorus: streetwise narrators, commentators, and Skid Row’s pulse. Each brings sass, energy, and attitude.
They provide a classic three-part harmony setup with a girl group vibe:
Crystal – Melody (Strong belt)
Usually carries the main tune so the audience can follow.
Can take the emotional high points and bring energy.
Belt those high notes confidently, but be careful with phrasing and breath support.
Chiffon – Higher Harmony
Sits above the melody most of the time.
Adds sparkle and lift to the sound.
Often uses head voice or mix to hit the really high harmonies without strain.
Ronnette – Lower Harmony
Anchors the harmony with richer, darker tones.
Provides contrast to the brightness of Crystal and Chiffon.
Keeps timing tight with the rhythm to support the chord structure.
